CHAPTER TWO

Zoe’s first night alone in her room was an odd and bittersweet ending to what had been a long and trying day. She was, of course, happy for her sister, who seemed genuinely excited about her engagement to Tanaka.

It had all happened so quickly, Saffron told her. Tanaka and his people had been monitoring the situation closely. Like Zoe, they thought it was Saffron who was at risk. They knew of the kidnapping almost immediately, but were unable to prevent Van Gaal and his crew from slipping away. Tanaka broke the news to Saffron, and then excused himself to organize a search party. And then he was back at the shop the next morning. With a proposal.

He approached Gerald and Edna first. He belonged to a clan, he explained, that was peaceful whenever possible, but which had great experience in the art of war. He was deeply troubled by Zoe’s abduction. He had for some time admired both girls at a distance. He wanted to help, but there was a catch. As leader of the clan, he could mobilize its resources only if family was involved. He asked for their permission to propose his hand in marriage to their eldest daughter. It would free him to do whatever was necessary to get Zoe back. He truly thought Saffron was the most beautiful young woman in the land, and was confident in his heart he would come to love her. And finally, he believed a business partnership with the Manns would be good for both parties. It was meant to be. Out of misfortune would come happiness and prosperity.

“I couldn’t say no,” Saffron told Zoe. “To save you, of course. And because I knew in that moment that his heart was true. I know it’s complicated. I know cats and canines have always been at odds. But sometimes peace starts with just two people. It’s the right thing, you have to trust me. We’ll talk more tomorrow, I promise.”

So Zoe let her go. She drifted into a deep and uneasy sleep. At one point in her dreams she found herself staring into the hungry eyes of the caged red wolves. She felt a deep sorry for their plight, as if they were all part of a larger family. Van Gaal was a monster, but perhaps an alliance with the Shepherd Pack was possible. They had, after all, saved her life. The eyes of the red wolves crept closer and closer, closer still. She could hear their hungry hearts beat. Was she approaching them… or were they hunting her…

Zoe sat up in bed, her nightgown drenched with sweat. The dream was gone. And it was just a dream, she knew that. But in her bones she also felt watched. By a wolf. She was sure of it. Her cat-sense never failed her. Exhausted, she let herself slide back into sleep once more… wondering who was watching her… wondering who she could trust.

At breakfast the next morning, her parents beamed across the table at her, but said little.
